Charles W. Bartlett studied at the Royal Academy of Arts, London and the Academie Julian in Paris, then traveled in Europe for several years creating watercolors and etchings. In 1915, he visited the shop of the ukiyo-e publisher Shozaburo Watanabe in Japan with sketches and watercolors from his travels. He practiced his print underdrawings with Japanese-style brushes and, through a trial-and error process with Watanabe, published a series of prints on India, Ceylon and Japan in 1916. En route back to England, he stopped in Honolulu where he settled and eventually became a central figure in the art world of Honolulu. Published in conjuction with A Printmaker in Paradise: The Art and Life of Charles W. Bartlett, this gift box of twenty 5x7 inch notecards of color woodblock prints includes 4 each of 5 images by Bartlett created during his travels in Asia.
