The exhibition From the Fire: Contemporary Korean Ceramics brings the finest of contemporary Korean ceramics in the largest survey of works to come to North America. The exhibitions also marks the first time a Korean curator has selected an exhibition of contemporary ceramics from Korea of this scale for tour in the United States.

From the Fire assembles 54 contemporary Korean ceramic artists whose pieces incorporate traditional techniques with innovative methods to create both functional and sculptural works. The 108 works in this exhibition, both large- and small-scale, date from the early 1990s through 2003, with many created especially for the exhibition.

The power and enchantment of the exhibition is in the open spectrum given to the technique, subject matter, textures and colors of the works. Nearly every aspect of ceramic art is represented - from clean lines, smooth surfaces and established techniques to playful designs, modern perspective, and colorful, energetic forms that give new life into this traditional art form.

The artists in the exhibition range in age from 30 to 80 years old and come from many regions and schools; providing works that spotlight the distinct trends in contemporary Korean ceramics. They are internationally celebrated ceramists with many whose work is featured in major museum collections around the world, such as the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, United Kingdom; and the Seoul Metropolitan Museum of Art, Korea.
