This book tells the story of one of the largest preservation projects ever completed in the United Sates and the woman who undertook it. Documenting heiress Doris Duke's preservation work in Newport and her founding of the NRF, the book describes how the group saved more than 80 historic buildings in Newport. Introductory essays describe how Doris Duke became involved in preservation, NRF's philosophy of preservation, and provide a primer on Newport's 18th century architecture. The core of the book focuses on NRF's 70 historic homes located in downtown Newport and provides house histories and photographs for each one. Extraordinary Vision also provides an illustrated gloassary to house styles and architectural elements and a removable map for self-guided neighborhood walking tours.
