Nancy Poes has lived in Honolulu since 1986, when she moved to Hawaii to paint and raise her two daughters. She received a degree in History from the University of California at Berkeley and studied illustration at Georgia State University. She lived in Germany in the early 1970s and has spent extensive time in Portugal, the native land of her grandparents. She is perhaps best known for her plein-air watercolors (a style used by French impressionist painters to represent the effects of outdoor light and atmosphere) through which she documents the landscapes and buildings of Hawaii. Poes has also produced a body of colorful figurative abstractions which express personal memories, desires, and concerns. Her series of five paintings of Academy views were done with sepia-colored ink and transparent watercolors.
