Guanyin is known as the goddess of mercy or the female Buddha. Seated in the posture of "royal ease", this large figure emanates an natural robust human quality in its full round carving but retains a sense of divinity in the composed face and downcast eyes. Traces of gesso and pigment can be seen on the loosely folded robes and across the black hair and crown, which is adorned with a small seated figure of the Buddha Amitabha.
Wood with traces of gesso and pigment, ca 1025. 8 x 10 in. reproduction with a double mat, packaged.
