Dated 1769, opaque watercolors on paper, 19cm x 12.3cm. Abu Hamid, India, Bikaner. This painting depicts one of the greatest epics of world literature, the Ramayana, which tells the story of Rama, prince of the Ayodhya kingdom, and his love, Sita. Rama was heir to the throne, but through the machinations of another contender, he was unfairly exiled, together with Sita and his brother Lakshmana. Wandering through the wilderness, they encountered the terrible demon Ravana, who fell in love with Sita and kidnapped her. Rama and his brother enlisted the aid of the monkey king Sugriva and his lieutenant, the fierce warrior-monkey Hanuman, to rescue Sita. A great battle ensued, in which Rama and his allies ultimately were victorious. Poster size is 18"h x 24"w.
