In 1930 and 1931 Kobayashi Kiyoshi privately published six woodblock prints in the series
Kindai jisesho (Styles of Contemporary Makeup) - punning the Japanese words for "style" and "makeup." These were created during the Taisho era, a time when Japanese art was influenced by Art Deco. Here is the consummate
moga (modern girl) signaling her conformity to the latest Western trends. Her dress, hair style and makeup display "wonton vanity" which, combined with intoxication, would no doubt lead to personal downfall and social disruption. For Kiyoshi,
Tipsy defines one extreme of Western modernity, appealing to some women and alluring to men.
