Oil painting by Enoch Wood Perry, 1865. When Enoch Wood Perry, Jr. arrived in Honolulu in 1864, a reporter for the Honolulu Advertiser noted wiht pleasure that a "genuine artist" was visiting the Islands. Perry deserved the appellation, having trained in Europe and traveled extensively, including a trip to Yosemite with Albert Bierstadt, a landscape painter celebrated for his dramatic representations of the American West.

During his stay in Hawaii, Perry was kept busy executing commissions for portraits and lanscapes, quickly filling up his King Street studio with finished works. In Manoa Valley from Waikiki, one of Perry's finest surviving landscape paintings, the rugged peaks of the Koolau Mountains, the arrangement of flowers and lush vegetation, and the picturesque charm of equestrians and their steeds turn this view of Oahu's Manoa Valley into a haunting image of a Pacific paradise.
